Description
An interpretation of a historical medical mask, known as the plague doctor mask. It features a distinctive elongated "beak," which during the times of plague epidemics was filled with a mixture of aromatic herbs and fragrant substances. The prevailing miasmatic theory of the time claimed that diseases were transmitted through bad air, and filling the mask's beak with herbs was believed to purify the inhaled air, protecting the physician from infection.
The design of the mask reflects the dark atmosphere of those times, combining both a protective function and a symbolic element intended to intimidate the disease, and perhaps also to deter the infected.
Inspired by a 17th-century exhibit at the Museum of Medical History in Ingolstadt, Germany.
